Bikeways Committee Minutes 06/11/05
MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES FOR THE June 6, 2005 MEETING

Meeting called to order at 4:30 PM.

Members:
·       Present were Chairman Don Ouellette, , Tina Jas, Dave Badger and Bob Donahoe
·       Absent with permission were Bernadette Burgess, Mike Kain, Dave Maynard and Ron Rencurrel.
·       Representing the town selectmen, P. Whitlock (absent).

Minutes of the May committee meeting were approved.

Old Business

Trail Signage:  Don stated that he needs to talk to the Town Administrator before proceeding further with the signs

Forging Alliances: A summary of Debbie Abbot’s letter to Don can be found on the 2nd page of this report.

Trail Maintenance:  We will work on the trail during June but will suspend activities during July and August due to the weather and the high volume of riders during the summer.

We performed some work in the vicinity of Nauset Road in May.  Town employees were painting the crosswalk and had to put up with 2 bikers who simply biked over wet paint even though it was well marked.  We were told this happens quite often.

Work is planned for the tunnel area in June.

Safety Program:  Mike Kain reported (thru Bob Donahoe) that he had contacted a J. Smith at the Technical School about the possibility of building signs to announce the approach of the tunnel.  There is interest in helping us.  Mike wrote a letter outlining our ideas but was refused at this time due to time commitments (end of school year).  Mike will resubmit the letter in early Fall for action in the Fall or next Spring.

Storm Drain covers: It was noted that some storm sewer grates on Nauset road are of the old style which present a hazard for bicycles with narrow tires.  Bernadette Burgess will follow up on the status of earlier discussions to fix this problem.

New Business

·       Our committee has an opening (Barbara Teague’s) which should be filled by the Fall.

Summary of Debbie Abbot’s letter to Don Ouellette dated April 21, 2005:

Summary

3 accidents in the Kingsbury Beach area – not related to terrain
2 accidents in the Tunnel – neither major
3 accidents in Gov Prence area which might be terrain related.  The Orleans to
Gov. Prence Road trail area has been recently widened from 8 feet to 10 feet.

In seven (7) of the twelve (12) incidents, the participant wore a helmet.

It’s probably reasonable to assume that there are 4-5 accidents not reported for each one that is reported and assistance required.

Very surprised at low incident report in the Tunnel.

The next meeting will be on Monday, July 11, 2005 due to the Holiday.   Discussion of next year’s officers will be on the agenda and we desire that all members be present.

The meeting ended at 5:15 PM.
